A solution, Move Tasmania’s Salmon Industry to Land-Based Farming
Hi I'm Andrew, The Founder of CHATO International Pty Ltd.
Tasmania’s marine ecosystems are under threat. Currently over 40,000 tons of biological waste from ocean-pen salmon farming are released into our oceans every year, devastating marine life, creating dead zones, and threatening the wild fish populations that depend on these waters. At the same time, the salmon industry is a cornerstone of Tasmania’s economy, supporting hundreds of jobs and contributing to regional communities. We believe it’s time for a solution that protects both the environment and the livelihoods of those who depend on salmon farming.
At CHATO International, we’ve developed an innovative way forward: WaveVolt. A cost incentive to bring Salmon Farming Onshore. This groundbreaking ocean-energy technology can power land-based salmon farming with clean, continuous electricity. By transitioning to Full Lifecycle Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), the salmon industry can eliminate ocean pollution, create long-term cost savings, and maintain its position as a global leader in sustainable seafood production.
Campaign Goal: $158,000 AUD
Why This Matters:
Tasmania’s salmon industry is at a critical juncture. The current ocean-pen systems are no longer viable in the face of environmental challenges and shifting consumer expectations for sustainably produced seafood. WaveVolt technology offers a solution that not only protects the environment but also ensures the retention of jobs in this vital industry while creating new opportunities through innovation.
Phase 1 Objectives and Activities:
1. Finalize Foundational Documentation:
o Develop a comprehensive white paper detailing WaveVolt’s energy design and benefits for sustainable salmon farming.
o Outcome: A critical tool for engaging stakeholders, retaining consumer trust, and advancing the industry’s sustainability goals.
o Cost: $50,000 (self-funded).
2. Secure Intellectual Property Protections:
o Conduct patent searches and Freedom to Operate (FTO) analysis.
o File provisional patents to safeguard innovations and attract investment.
o Outcome: Protect the project’s innovations while ensuring compliance with global standards.
o Cost: $16,000–$33,000 AUD.
3. Perform Technical Due Diligence and Validation:
o Partner with experts to refine designs, validate systems, and ensure regulatory compliance.
o Outcome: Strengthen the project’s credibility and readiness for commercial scaling.
o Cost: $50,000–$125,000 AUD.
Total Estimated Cost for Phase 1: $66,000–$158,000 AUD
What This Means for Tasmania:
• Job Security and Creation: Transitioning to land-based salmon farming will preserve existing jobs and create new ones in infrastructure development, operations, and support industries.
• Environmental Protection: By eliminating pollution from ocean pens, this project will restore Tasmania’s marine ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
• Long-Term Savings: Land-based systems powered by WaveVolt will save up to $60 million annually, on electricity costs* ensuring the financial sustainability of the salmon industry.
• Global Recognition: Embracing sustainable practices will position Tasmania as a world leader in responsible salmon farming, boosting consumer trust and market share.
